High-quality social welfare and health care and a safe living environment are vital to our well-being. The overall aim of the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira) is to ensure the equal treatment of all Finnish residents and their right to social welfare and health care services as well as to safeguard patient and client safety at all times.
Valvira has placed particular emphasis on promoting effective, proactive and interactive supervision based on risk assessment. Self-monitoring carried out by service providers themselves is, and ought to be, the most effective form of supervision. The role of the supervisory authorities is to offer support and guidance to the social welfare and health care service providers as they undertake self-monitoring.
