Doctor identification number

When you are licensed or issued with your first limited authorisation to practice medicine in Finland, Valvira will provide you with a doctor identification number (yksilöintitunnus in Finnish). You must make sure that you include this number, also called a health care provider identifier, in all prescriptions and medical statements you issue to patients.

Finnish register for healthcare professionals

Once you have been licensed for medical practice in Finland, you will be added to the Central Register of Healthcare Professionals named Terhikki. Employers will use the register during hiring to make sure that prospective employees are properly licensed to practice medicine.

Some parts of Terhikki are also open to all who can use the website in Finnish or Swedish. They can search basic information on professional competence of a given practitioner.

Note: practicing medicine without registration is an offence punishable with a fine or imprisonment.
